[오페라] Don Carlo

소프라노 언니의 아리아가 어찌나 아름답고 구슬펐는지
나도 모르게 브라보를 외쳤다.

집에 돌아오는 내내
가슴이 터지도록 노래를 외치고 싶었다.

About the piece

Don Carlos: the great play which, under Schiller’s pen, grew from an historical piece into a drama full of ideas and was later used by Verdi to create his grand opéra. If politics dictate belief, then humanity is in a sorry way. Enlightened attempts to change events do not get very far if everyone involved is being used like men in a game of chess. The most sinister sounds and most glowing melodies that Verdi ever wrote combine to produce an overpowering panorama of the rugged beauty, and royal splendour of Spain during the Inquisition, of passionate love and solemn friendship, in which it is shown that although the powers that be might try and suppress freedom of thought, they cannot extingish hope.

This new production by David McVicar (with Brigitte Reiffenstuel’s magnificent costumes) was an incredible success with the public. You now have the chance to see it again, with a few changes to the cast: shooting star Elza van den Heever as Elisabeth, Aris Argiris as Posa. Bálint Szabó now sings King Philipp. Yonghoon Lee reinforces his presence in Frankfurt and Michaela Schuster is back – conducted by Stefan Anton Reck and Roland Böer.
